Antique Album or Signature quilt from circa 1880s. The quilt measures 68 by 87 inches. The quilt consists of 20 blocks that are a cross between the album block and cobblestone block. Each block measures about 14 inches square with fabrics that include turkey red, double pinks, chrome yellow, cheddars, shirtings, and a brown-red that might be an oxblood. Each block is signed in ink with a name from Bergen County, NJ. Samuel Pulis Esq. (assistant ticket agent at Campgaw of the Oswego Midland and New York O.M. & R. Road), Mrs. Leah Pulis (Campgaw Station), Peter H. Pulis Esq. (Campgaw Bergen Co. New Jersey), Mr. Henry Pulis (Campgaw Bergen Co. New Jersey), Mrs. Hester Pulis (wife of Henry Pulis Esq. Campgaw) and Miss Mary Ellen Pulis (Campgaw), Mr. Henry Alyea (Wyckoff), Mrs. E.A. Alyea (Campgaw Bergen Co. New Jersey United States), Mrs. Margaret Alyea (Wyckoff), Albert Alyea Esq. (Hawthorne), Maria Alyea (Hawthorne), Albert Alyea (Wyckoff) and Elizabeth Ann Alyea (Wyckoff), William G. Ackerman Esq., Mrs. Catherine Ann Ackerman (Sicomac) and Charity Ackerman (Wyckoff), William Zabriskie Esq. and Dolly Zabriskie (Sicomac), Andrew G. Snyder (Paterson New Jersey) and Mary Carmody (Englewood).
The sashing is 2.5 inches wide and is a white with red diamond print shirting. The cornerstones are oxblood and shirting pinwheels. It is hand pieced and hand quilted at 6 spi in a grid pattern in each block and a zig zag pattern in the sashing. The backing is a white with black print shirting, and probably had an original width of about 24 inches wide. Very thin cotton batting was used. The binding is an oxblood color bias tape, and was applied by hand on both front and back, rounded at the corners.
The quilt is in very good condition with some age discoloration in the blocks, and on the back. There is also a pink spot on the back that does not go through to the front.
This antique album quilt is great piece of NJ history. The quilt came from the Snyder estate in Wyckoff, NJ.
