Antique Album or Signature quilt from circa 1880s. The quilt measures 60 by 78 inches. The quilt consists of 20 blocks that are a cross between the album block and cobblestone block. Each block measures about 13.5 inches square with fabrics that include madder red, double pinks, chrome yellow, cheddars, shirtings, indigo, and early purple, overdyed green. Each block is signed in ink with a name, most from Campgaw, in Bergen County, NJ. Daniel C. Sturr, Maggie Sturr, Michael Sturr, Ida Agnes Sturr, Daniel H Sturr. and John H. Sturr, other names include Abram and Jane Carlow, Henry Pulis, Mrs. Elizabeth Ann and Laurinda Ackerman (Oakland, NJ), Martha C. King and Mary Ellen Van Houten, and more.. The sashing is 2 inches wide and is a white with blue print shirting. The cornerstones are madder. It is hand pieced and hand quilted at 8spi in a grid pattern in each block and a diamond pattern in the sashing. The backing is an off white muslin. Medium cotton batting was used. The binding on grain madder cotton, and was applied by machine on the top and by hand on the back.
The quilt is in very good condition with some age discoloration in the blocks, and on the back. This antique album quilt is great piece of NJ history. The quilt came from the Snyder estate in Wyckoff, NJ.
