Antique collar, circa 1850 from Philadelphia, off white cotton Broderie Anglais work, measuring 14 inches along the inner collar by 4 inches wide. Lots of hand work in the finest stitches. There are hand made eyelet leaves with satin stitched and buttonhole stitch details, eyelets galore, and more. The edges are hand finished in buttonhole stitches forming pretty scallops. Condition is fair, has holes along the top. These collars come from the Batcheler estate in Philadelphia, PA. The house was a treasure trove of early American furniture and textiles. Included with the collars was the following note: "These collars, though badly torn in spots, should be preserved as examples of the high skill and art of needlework of the 19th century - first half. These are both Fritz Chandler and Harrision Hartshouse items - country mid city - standards the same." Another notation dated them to 1840-1860, as well.
