lace1085 - Antique Circa 1850 Cutwork Collar with Leaves and Flowers
Antique Circa 1850 Cutwork Collar with Leaves and Flowers
Antique collar, circa 1850 from Philadelphia, off white cotton with cutwork, measuring 14 inches along the inner collar by 2.5 inches wide. The amount of hand embroidery, the detail of it, and the workmanship is stunning. There are flowers with tiny drawnwork details in the petals, leaves with pin point details, layers of satin stitches, and more. The edges are hand finished in buttonhole stitches forming pretty scallops. Condition is very good with small discolorations and some splits. These collars come from the Batcheler estate in Philadelphia, PA. The house was a treasure trove of early American furniture and textiles. Included with the collars was the following note: "These collars, though badly torn in spots, should be preserved as examples of the high skill and art of needlework of the 19th century - first half. These are both Fritz Chandler and Harrision Hartshouse items - country mid city - standards the same." Another notation dated them to 1840-1860, as well.
