Antique collar, circa 1850 from Philadelphia, off white cotton with cutwork, measuring 12 inches along the inner collar by 6 inches wide. There is lots of hand work in the finest stitches. The cutwork yields floral designs with leaves and scrolls, with thread bridges like Battenberg lace. The details are not just embroidered, but embroidered in buttonhole stitches, some of the smallest I have ever seen. At first I thought they were tambour chain stitches, but they are buttonhole...mind boggling! Condition is very good. These collars come from the Batcheler estate in Philadelphia, PA. The house was a treasure trove of early American furniture and textiles. Included with the collars was the following note: "These collars, though badly torn in spots, should be preserved as examples of the high skill and art of needlework of the 19th century - first half. These are both Fritz Chandler and Harrision Hartshouse items - country mid city - standards the same." Another notation dated them to 1840-1860, as well.
