Antique quilt, circa 1850s, in white and Turkey red fabric. It measures 74 by 77 inches. There are 56 blocks, each about 9 inches square. The pattern is number 17.11 in Brackman’s Encyclopedia of Applique Quilt Patterns, Hickory Leaf also known as Compass, The Reel, and Oak Leaf. It is hand appliquéd, hand pieced, and hand quilted at 7 spi. It is quilted by the piece, and in the red centers, sometimes in an X pattern, sometimes just diagonally. The 6 inch border is hand pieced and is on 3 sides, it is a zig zag pattern. It is in good condition with spots and darkening with age on both the front and back. I have photographed the worst of it. I love the Turkey red fabric that was used, it has little dashes of green and dots of yellow in it.
