Antique Quilt, circa 1870, from Lancaster, Pennsylvania in a Double Irish Chain Pattern. The top is made from three cotton print fabrics: an early overdyed green, a double pink, and a yellow fabric.
The quilt measures 92 by 93 inches. There are 41 8 by 8 inch 25 patch blocks with each square measuring 1.5 inches alternating with 40 8 by 8 inch pink square blocks with a 1.5 inch green print square hand appliquéd in each corner. There are three borders. A 2 inch wide pink and yellow sawtooth border, followed by a 6.75 inch wide pink border, followed by a 2 inch pink and green sawtooth border. The green print binding is .25 inches, on grain, and hand applied on both sides.
The backing is a red and white thin striped printed cotton fabric (with a 25 inch selvage). There is a thin cotton batting inside. The quilt is completely hand made. It is hand pieced, and hand quilted at 8 spi. It is quilted in a cross hatch pattern in the pink areas, by the piece for each small square and triangle, and a 5 line cable pattern in the pink border.
The quilt is in very good condition with only a minor fade linen through the center which I have tried to photograph, and 1 small spot.
